On this day, the world remembers the 1.5 million Jewish children, and tens of thousands of other children who were murdered by the Nazis and their supporters. The best tribute to the memory of these children’s an ongoing effort to teach the universal lessons of the Holocaust so that no such horror is visited upon future generations.

The Canadian government will receive a petition next week signed by more than 570,000 people who are calling for action to stop sex-trafficking of children and youths.

A coalition consisting of groups such as Beyond Borders, The Somaly Mam Foundation, and The Body Shop are presenting Vic Toews, Minister of Public Safety with a petition this Tuesday in Ottawa.

The groups claims that human-trafficking is the fastest growing industry of the criminal world predominantly for the purpose of sexual exploitation. Hundreds of women and children are trafficked into Canada each year and as many as 2,000 per year are trafficked out of Canada into the U.S.

I hope you will consider getting involved in any organization that is a part of ECPAT (End Child Prostitution and Trafficking) International. Please visit my Resources page to see the Beyond Borders link and other organizations that I admire.

My sister, Nia Vardalos is in Winnipeg this summer shooting a movie for American Girl, a company that she admires. American Girl celebrates girls and all that they can be through the development of products and experiences that help girls grow up in a wholesome way. Products such as dolls, books, magazines and movies encourage girls to enjoy girlhood through fun and enchanting play. The retail stores in large cities through-out the U.S are magnificent. If you ever have a chance please visit as the concept is ingenious.

Nia was matched with her daughter through American Foster Care and took this movie role to be “cool” with her daughter’s peers. She is the National Adoption spokeperson in the U.S. and advocates for children through several organizations that she supports. The movie will take six weeks to complete so be on the look out if you live in Winnipeg. Today, she was at my husband’s restaurant (Bellamy’s, in St. Vital) eating a greek salad and then to Eva’s on Corydon for gelato.

Last night, I was on the American Girl movie set with my children and a photo is posted on Facebook| Safe2Go.
