Human rights today: February 6, 2012
International day against female genital mutilation. Female genital mutilation (FGM) is the removal, in whole or in part, of external female genitalia for non-medical purposes. An estimated 100-140 million girls and women have been subjected to FGM, about 3 million girls annually.Since 2010 in the villages of Senegal, a documentary film called “Futa, It is Time to Talk” has been distributed to provide villagers with information about the health risks associated with FGM and encourages communities to abandon the practice.
